The book is titled “Those Shoes”, by Maribeth Boelts and it is a favorite of all three of my boys. The premise is simple, a young boy wants to have the coolest shoes in school, but his grandma cannot afford them. He schemes and plots and finally gets a pair that are too small, but were all that he could afford. After a few days of wearing too small shoes, he notices that his friend is in need of new shoes. One night, he sneaks out and leaves a pair of “those shoes” on his friends front door.
Well it happened for real (with some minor changes to the plot) to a high school boy in North Carolina. Yaovi Mawuli loves shoes, he collects them, trades them, and sells them. So he spends time looking at other students feet.
Yaovi noticed a classmate who’s shoes were sore worn down that other students were making fun of him for them. Yaovi posted the included image of the shoe to a Facebook group, asking the others how he could help the student without making him feel awkward about.
The result, a new pair of “Concord” Air Jordan 11 lows, and a very happy classmate.
