In 1989 DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Will Smith) planted the seed – I think I can beat Mike Tyson. A feat that to that point, nobody had even come close to. Tyson, the youngest person to ever win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles. The Fresh Prince may have over reached at that point, but fast forward a few months later later, and enter James Buster Douglas. He too thought that he could be Mike Tyson.
On February 11th, 1999, in Tokyo, Japan, Tyson and Douglas met. The fight was 38:1 in Tyson’s favor at the start of the match, but had been as high as 50:1 in Vegas before the match started.
Just getting into the ring with Tyson (37-0) at that time was a frightful thought. Douglas (30-4-1) knew that if he could make it through the first three rounds that he had a chance. He also knew that he wanted to make his mother, who died 23 days prior to the match proud.
After getting knocked down in the 8th round, and milking the count all of the way to 9 – Douglas came back in the 9th round and shocked the boxing world.
Enjoy today’s video – and whatever obstacle is standing in your way today – go out there and knock it on it’s butt.
